HS2: Protesters in Wendover camp out in woodland on railway route

The group named ‘Wendover Active Resistance Camp’ or ‘W.A.R. against HS2’ are a collective of independent individuals who aim to protect the environment and wildlife.

In the woodlands, the camp has built a number of treehouses, forts, and signs in protest of the HS2 construction.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by the group in order to fund the "camp kitchen pot to subsidise our kitchen, buy loo roll, warm clothes, first aid kits and tree among other things we will need along the way."

The construction and operation of Phase One of HS2 is authorised by the High Speed Rail (London - West Midlands) Act 2017.

It plans to plant 22,000 trees, create a new woodland, which will link to the remains of Jones' Hill Wood connecting it to a nearby wood.

A long the first phase of the line HS2 said it would plant up to seven million trees and shrubs creating more than 12.7 square miles of new woodland.

HS2 claims to be one of the most sustainable high-speed railways in the world, supporting the UK's transition to a net-zero economy.

The estimated final cost of the HS2 project is now more than £100bn.
