It may not be apparent but this almost tranquil photo of children standing on the kerb side was taken at what has become a busy road in Watford.

The Watford Observer has again teamed up with Watford Museum and is delighted to showcase some pictures from its archive.

The museum's volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: "This photograph was produced as a postcard and, without the caption, it would be very hard to identify this as a view down Station Road especially as the road is wider today.

"The card was posted in 1908 by Clem, who wrote on the back “note little ones on this P.C. happened to see them in a shop window” – it’s not clear if Clem saw the children or just the post card in the window!

Clem's message on the back of the postcard

"The only vehicles in the road are two cyclists and a horse and cart, the paved strips across the road must have made it easier for pedestrians to cross especially in wet weather."

Watford Museum is currently closed under government restrictions but you can still pay it a virtual visit at or find the museum on Facebook and Instagram @watfordmuseum
