Three Rivers District Council has remained in control of the Liberal Democrats following the 2021 elections.

The party held on to eight of 12 council seats up for election, and regained a ninth, after a count today at Watersmeet Theatre in Rickmansworth.

The Conservatives kept three of their seats, while Labour held onto its South Oxhey seat.

In Gade Valley, the Lib Dems took back control of one of the seats after victory from their candidate Ruth Clark.

She fills the spot of Joy Mann, who is retiring. Ms Mann was formerly a Liberal Democrat councillor, but she left the party last year to become an Independent alongside fellow Gade Valley councillor Alex Michaels.

Council leader Sarah Nelmes told the Observer: "I'm very pleased with the support we received from the residents of Three Rivers to continue our work for a fairer, greener and healthier place for us to live, work and thrive."

Dominic Sokalski, who is a councillor in Dickinsons ward, tweeted: "Absolutely delighted we held all our wards on Three Rivers District Council and gained another one back - increasing our majority. Thank you to everyone who supported us."

The Green Party came close to taking the Dickinsons seat in Croxley Green from the Lib Dems but Chris Mitchell's 961 votes was not enough to beat the Lib Dems' Paul Rainbow, who polled 1,078 votes after residents went to the polls on Thursday.

With all of the district votes now counted and all of the seats decided, the Lib Dems now have a majority of seven on the district council.

There was good news as well for the Lib Dems in the Three Rivers division of the Hertfordshire County Council elections, which were completed on Saturday.

The party retained its three seats of Abbots Langley, Croxley, and Three Rivers Rural.

There was better news for the Conservatives - and disappointment for Labour - after the Tories gained South Oxhey & Eastbury, which had been held by Labour's Joan King.

New county councillor for the area, Christopher Alley, tweeted: "It is a great honor to be elected as the Hertfordshire County Councillor for South Oxhey and Eastbury. I would like to thank the people of South Oxhey and Eastbury for putting their trust in me. I promise I will work hard for our community."

The Conservatives retained control of the county council as a whole but have suffered the loss of their leader David Williams.

Mr Williams was beaten in his Harpenden North East seat by Lib Dem candidate Paul de Kort.

Conservative candidates Valerie Coltman and George Hallam-Attree have been elected to the Carpenders Park ward on Watford Rural Parish Council, while Clare Leahy won the race for Labour in South Oxhey on the same council.
