A county councillor has condemned graffiti which he believes is the work of someone "seeking to sow fear and division in a community".

Police and other local authorities are aware of graffiti which has been scrawled in parts of South Oxhey over the last couple of weeks.

'White Pride' has been stamped in white capital letters on a green building in Prestwick Road.

Meanwhile, the letters 'BNP' have been scrawled more recently on a wall a little further down the road.

South Oxhey & Eastbury county councillor Christopher Alley believes 'BNP' stands for the British National Party - a far-right political party in the UK.

The 'White Pride' graffiti, which was first reported by Watford Rural parish councillor Angela Arnold, is believed to have appeared on or around May 16 and has been reported to Hertfordshire Constabulary and the county council by Cllr Alley.

Councillor Alley, who was elected to Hertfordshire County Council as a Conservative representative in the local elections earlier this month, said: "South Oxhey is a great community which I am proud to call home. We have come a long way since the dark days of 2008 when the British National Party won a seat here at Three Rivers District Council.

"The racist graffiti on Prestwick Road Meadows is the work of hateful individuals who seek to sow fear and division in our community. They have and will fail to do so.

"I know the fine people of South Oxhey will join me in rejecting racism and all forms of extremism."

Cllr Alley is also aware of further graffiti, shown below, and both in Prestwick Road. The example of the right was next to the where 'BNP' has been scrawled, but has since been crossed out.
