CHESS players from Uxbridge and Watford met on Monday [14] in what is believed to be the first English inter-club match since the outbreak of COVID-19.
Twelve children from each club played a double-round match, with Uxbridge Juniors winning 18-6 to end Watford's streak of three consecutive victories, all achieved before the start of the pandemic.
Regulations restricting adult gatherings have forced many chess clubs to resort to online play, but Watford Juniors were able to resume practising over the board on March 29 and their Uxbridge counterparts shortly afterwards.
But this was the first competitive match for either club - something no other English clubhas managed.
Both clubs expect to take part in the elite Junior Four Nations Chess League if this resumes, as expected, in September.
