AUTHOR and Battle of Britain historian Dilip Sarkar is celebrating the imminent publication of his latest book.

Spitfire Down tells the moving and heart-breaking stories of 14 Spitfire pilots who failed to return from their missions.

They include Franek Surma, a Polish pilot who went missing whilst on combat operations over France.

Inspired by Franek’s story, Mr Sarkar arranged for a memorial to be built for the pilot in Malvern, close to where he successfully bailed out of a malfunctioning Spitfire that had burst into flames.

It was the first memorial in the country for a Polish Spitfire pilot, who played a crucial role in the Battle of Britain as one of The Few.

Mr Sarkar is also releasing Forgotten Heroes of the Battle of Britain, which deals with members of The Few whose achievements were never fully recognised.

He is hosting an event at The Battle of Britain Bunker on October 16 in Uxbridge, where readers can learn more about the pilots featured in more than 50 books he has written.

There will be three talks during the day.
