A NEW mascot designed by a Ruislip girl aims to encourage safer travel to and from school.

Cerys Newman, a pupil at Sacred Heart Primary School, won Hillingdon Council's Road Safety and School Travel competition with her design, Fred the Penguin.

Fred, created because she likes penguins and thought it would be cool to have a lollipop version, will be used to inspire pupils and their parents.

Fred will attend events and play days for children under seven.

More than 400 children entered the competition, sponsored by Cyclepods, who encourage safe travel with products such as the Minipod. Cyclepod donated a scooter to Cerys.

Nine runners up were: Simon Sign - Lily White from Dr Triplett's Primary School, Hayes Outlook Owen - Kadeja Johnson from Dr Triplett's Bertie the Braveheart Bear - Jodie Thompson from Grange Park Primary School, Hayes Safety Sam - Harrison Deas from St Swithun Wells Primary School, Ruislip Promenade - Jade Hampton from Bourne Primary School, South Ruislip Be Aware Claire - Grace Amber Kipling from Ruislip Gardens Primary School Safety Steve - Milly Dalton from Dr Triplett's Monti Mouse - Hannah Marie from Dr Triplett's, and Road Toad - Samuel Wilthire from Dr Triplett's.
