Roberto Pereyra had to settle for a place on the bench as Argentina beat Mexico 2-0 in a friendly overnight.

Watford’s top scorer, who celebrated his recall to the national squad with a goal in the 4-0 victory over Iraq last month, watched on as former Everton defender Ramiro Funes Mori gave the hosts the lead just before half-time.

Argentina had to wait until seven minutes from time for the win to be secured through an own goal from substitute Isaac Brizuela, who had replaced former Hornet Miguel Layun four minutes beforehand.

The two countries meet again on Wednesday in the second part of their double header.
