HILLINGDON Swimming Club is holding its annual gala in honour of Maurice and Daphne Short this weekend (15-16).
It will take place at Hillingdon Sports and Leisure complex and will involve a number of clubs across the region.
Maurice and Daphne Short became part of the club in the 1980s when their daughters started to swim for the Ruislip and Northwood club, as it was known then.
They were committed volunteers and led from the front by refereeing, judging and time keeping at galas and through their involvement on the club’s committees. Maurice was also a member of the National Panel for Swimming Officials.

Both became President of Hillingdon Swimming Club and of Middlesex Swimming, through which they developed the sport.
The gala in their name attracts a number of clubs, who use it as preparation for end-of-season meets such as the National Championships.
The couple’s ethos can still be seen in the club today, and the gala will be supported by a vast number of parent volunteers, taking on the roles that Maurice and Daphne once did.
