Rotimi Segun is hoping that Saracens can transfer their excellent form in the Premiership Rugby 7s to the Premiership Rugby Cup.

The 2019 Premiership Rugby Cup runners-up begin their season away against Wasps in the domestic cup competition just a week after beating them in the Premiership Rugby 7s final.

Saracens defended their title beating Wasps 35-19 in the showdown at Franklin’s Gardens and Segun was a key member of the team.

The 22-year-old believes the 31-0 thumping of Exeter Chiefs in the semi-final showed Saracens’ determination in defence.

“To win the 7s in the way we did was a great feeling,” Segun said.

“We showed really togetherness and resilience throughout both days, particularly in the semi-final against Exeter.

“To nil any side is an achievement in itself and that’s testament to everyone’s defensive efforts and determination to do well for each other. Hopefully we can take that into the XVs format.”

In last season’s Premiership Rugby Cup, Saracens were beaten 23-9 by Northampton Saints in the final and the side will be looking to go one step further.

With the Rugby World Cup taking place, the competition is likely to be an opportunity for young players to stake a claim at a regular place in the Saracens team.

The winger will be hoping to add to his 12 appearances and believes the young team have to take on the mantle while the international stars are away.

He said: “It’s often said that the Prem Cup is an opportunity for the younger players to show what they’re capable of and it really is.

“Last season a lot of the lads put their hands up with their performances and we did extremely well to get the final.

“We have a four-week block in this tournament which will hopefully stand us in good stead ahead of the Premiership season.

“It’s been a long pre-season and a lot of hard work has gone into preparing us for this opening match. The boys can’t wait to get out there.

“There are 15 players on international duty so while they’re away it’s up to us to perform well, not only for ourselves but to make the club and fans proud.”
