The opening weekend of the Aviva Premiership Rugby season is always packed full of firsts, but Saracens new boy Alex Lozowski is hoping to break a host of ducks on his own at the London Double Header.

The 23-year-old fly-half signed for the north Londoners over the summer from Wasps in a bid for more first-team action this term.

Getting selected for his full debut in Sarries’ first matchday squad is priority number one for the former Yorkshire Carnegie player and, having previously been a travelling reserve at Twickenham for Wasps, if he does so he will earn his first London Double Header appearance.

And having enjoyed some special memories of the event as a schoolboy spectator, Lozowski is desperate to make this the year he finally feels the hallowed Rugby HQ turf under his boots.

“I’m really excited for the London Double Header,” he said. “Any game at Twickenham is always a great occasion, and you get some huge crowds.

“I used to go myself as a youngster and I remember I always really looked forward to the opening weekend of the season because of that.

“It would usually coincide with the first game of the season for school. I’d play in the morning and then head off to watch the Double Header in the afternoon with my dad.

“I did it for three years on the trot, and I can remember watching some great games over the years.

“It’s the perfect start to the season, and I’ve not played a London Double Header or at Twickenham yet, so if I am involved this could be my first one.

“Everyone wants to be part of the first squad for the first game of the season, so it is definitely something I will be working as hard as possible towards over the next week or so.”

After a breakthrough season in 2014/15 where he impressed in Aviva Premiership Rugby for Wasps, largely off the bench for Andy Goode, Lozowski was also nominated for the LV= Breakthrough Player of the Season for his performances in the LV= Cup.

He was used more sparingly last term by the Coventry outfit and only added six senior appearances to his tally – something he looks to put right with Saracens.

And while that may seem a tall order as he walks into the European Champions’ dressing room, with a space vacated by retired No.#10 Charlie Hodgson and a strong pre-season campaign under his belt, Lozowski is confident he can hit the ground running.

He said: “I’m enjoying it a lot here. They have been a very successful side the past few seasons, so I have just tried to settle in as best I can.

“When you hear there is an opportunity to come and play for the best team in Europe and the two-time champions of England, it is really difficult to turn that down and say you don’t want to be a part of it.

“Having spoken to the coaches before coming, I felt like this was the best place for me to improve as a player and also be part of a great team.”
