England get their World Cup campaign off and running against Tunisia in Volgograd on Monday.
The nations have met just twice before and have not crossed paths in two decades.
Here, Press Association Sport looks at their previous encounters.
June 2, 1990 – Tunisia 1 England 1
Bobby Robson’s England were tuning up for Italia 90 when they travelled to the Stade Olympique El Menzah in Tunis. They were punished for a sluggish start when a mis-placed pass from Paul Gascoigne landed invitingly for Abdelhamid Hergal, who unleashed a dipping first-time effort from 35 yards to leave Peter Shilton stranded. England looked to be heading to Italy on a losing note but substitute Steve Bull ensured a draw in the 89th minute, pending to head home a John Barnes cross.
June 15, 1998 – England 2 Tunisia 0
Almost 20 years to the day, the nations met at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille. Then, as now, it was the opening game of a World Cup.
Current boss Gareth Southgate was in the starting XI back then and played his part in a confident victory. Captain Alan Shearer nodded them in front shortly before half-time, getting on the end of a free-kick from left-back Graeme Le Saux. Paul Scholes made the points safe in the closing moments, picking up Paul Ince’s pass and finishing smartly via the inside of the post.
