It was a very grand entrance, leading up to Stoke Park. The long road swept ahead in front of us, a golf course and glorious English countryside flanked the route; then on to the magnificent house in all its imposing splendour.

THERE is no chance of leaving the Harte and Magpies hungry as the portions are huge. If you are looking for good food at a reasonable price, where dogs and family are welcome, this pub is the one for you.

A VODKA bar might not be your first destination when searching around for a bite to eat, but a recent overhaul at Beaconsfield’s Revolution reveals an inviting space with a solid, varied menu which throws up a few surprises.

THE Old Mill in Berkhamsted has undergone an extensive renovation transforming both inside and out into a beautifully designed space. Arriving on a very busy Wednesday evening I wondered if the seasonal cuisine would match the impressive new look.

EARTHY greens and oranges adorn the walls, lanterns hang from the ceilings, wooden screens nestle between tables- going to Papad in Chesham feels as if you are stepping away from Bucks into another country.

I MADE a mistake at my latest visit to a curry house in High Wycombe. I ate too many poppadums. I just can't get enough of the things and while absent mindedly picking at them while talking to my friend I overindulged which led to me struggling with the rest of the meal at Bombay Palace.

BEING a Marlow girl, I’ve remembered many trips to the old Britannia pub over the years, but they weren’t always thought of with fondness. There were the sticky floors, copious amounts of (too much) space which struggled to be filled, and as much as various owners tried to make it look its best, it was always a little on the scruffy side.

YOU'D be hard pushed to meet a friendlier landlord than Richard Edwards at The Potters Arms in Winchmore Hill. Smiley and unassuming he has been at the pub for 16 months and as well as running regular comedy nights and welcoming various clubs he is also offering a menu of pub classics with a restaurant feel.

HENLEY Regatta - the perfect chance to enjoy a typical English summer, quaff back glasses of champagne and have a jolly good time. Oh, and there’s the rowing. Victoria MacFarlaine spent a day at the event.

THE Mill at Sonning has a unique experience for theatre goers with a hot home cooked meal served before you see a show- all in the same venue. The theatre has been entertaining for 30 years and offers a quaint and pleasant experience.

THE Sausage Tree has quite a name in High Wycombe, although it is tucked away in a back street opposite The Rye and could be easily missed. But mention it to any long term resident and they are sure to have a view on it. Having been on my list of places to eat for a long time I was impressed by the choice and standard of the food on offer.

THE Junction's food is not what you expect. The exterior of the pub is slightly overbearing at a busy junction in Wycombe Marsh and I expected your standard pub fare but this was not what I found- instead it was beautifully cooked with carefully prepared dishes and just a touch of fine dining.

WHEN I went travelling around the world I came home with a love for Thai food, after discovering it was my most favourite cuisine I had tried. So it was with some trepidation when I went to the Blue Orchid in Amersham as to whether the food would live up to my expectations. It did in fact surpass them.

I HAVE often drove past Bombay Dream in Wooburn Moor which is on the busy road from High Wycombe to Beaconsfield but never ventured inside. I had heard lots of good things about it so I went along on a fairly busy Thursday night with high expectations.

SITTING in the charming, comfortable surroundings of The Black Horse at Fulmer I soon forgot about the cold winter's evening outside. The pub has recently been refurbished and is full of nooks and crannies where you can while away your evening. And as for the food- it matches the atmosphere- freshly cooked, honest food stripped back to the basics.

JUST the name of The Jolly Cricketers in Seer Green evokes images of a warm, cosy pub with friendly staff and I wasn't disappointed by the reality or with the food. Matt Lyons took the helm of the kitchen at the end of last year and offers a menu of modern British cooking which is both hearty and detailed in its presentation.

LUKE Thomas must get annoyed at people who keep referring to his age. But I just can't help it. The 18-year-old has achieved so much already and is currently head chef at Sanctum on the Green in Cookham Dean. He has been there since February and in that time has been recording The Teenage Chef for BBC3, a lot to ask while starting out at a restaurant.

LOCH Fyne has 42 restaurants across Britain but when I was welcomed by the friendly staff at its site in Old Beaconsfield it felt far away from a chain. The restaurant has just undergone a refurbishment and the atmosphere was relaxed and had a slightly seaside feel.

THE Plough at Winchmore Hill is still known for being run by Eastenders star Barbara Windsor, even though it has been years since she has been there. After two years of being closed new owner Raffaele Mercurio is hoping it will soon be known for quality, fresh Italian food, made with produce from the area. It also has a village shop, a cosy bar and a large restaurant.

I'M not a big fan of boats after developing a fear of water when I went white water rafting on The Nile but I had no need to worry when I went to The Showboat restaurant near Marlow for a meal. Situated in the marina at the elegant Harleyford Estate it is securely fixed and barely moves, and for the first time this year is open to members of the public. After sampling the amazing food and warm hospitality it is certainly competition for the other Marlow restaurants.
