THE CUSTOMER service at The Tree Hotel in Cadmore End is second to none but the rest of my stay was a bit of a mixed bag.

The hotel is easy to find and is situated on the busy Marlow Road. It was at one point top of the TripAdvisor reviews of places to eat in High Wycombe but has now slipped to second.

And unfortunately the standard of the food wasn't as good as when I last visited, but I think this was down to the timing of my visit.

I was told they were having kitchen staffing issues and there was just one chef covering the extensive menu.

After arriving in the afternoon we were shown to our room. It had a beautiful wooden double bed but the style of the room seemed quite a mix- with older, more old fashioned fittings with modern paintings adorning the walls.

It perhaps could do with a slight update but the room and bathroom were both impeccably clean and tidy.

The windows were the only thing which let it down, which needed a clean.

We headed down for dinner in the evening- the menu is extremely varied mixing pub classics with Indian and Thai dishes.

When we sat down we were told there were no steaks, no Thai curry and another fish dish wasn't available.

For starters we had the mixed Indian starter which was a mix of chicken tikka, fish pakora, a quarter of tandoori chicken, vegetable samosas and duck spring rolls, with a mint chutney and salad (£13.95).

This was the best bit of the meal- the tikka was beautifully tender as was the tandoori. And the duck spring rolls had the perfect crispy outer layer with a moreish filling. The fish pakora was a delicate white fish covered in crispy batter.

For the main course I had the Pork Tenderloin (£15.95). The pork was succulent and balanced on top of a lovely pile of roasted apple and garlicky potato- both of which were delicious. The green sauce around the edge was very sweet and the wilted greens on top could have been a bit fresher.

Tom went for the Anglo Indian Railway Lamb Curry (£14.95) which is slow cooked diced lamb with coconut and baby new potatoes, served with onion pilau rice and poppadum.

He asked for it spicy but it did not taste very hot.

My dessert, Baked Mango Cheesecake served with berry compote (£4.95) was very disappointing. I could not taste any mango at all and the cheesecake didn't really taste of much. The presentation of the berry compote wasn't great either.

However, Tom went for the passionfruit sorbet (£4.50), which was delicious- really bursting with fruitiness.

The staff there are really friendly and always on hand to help and I like the way the restaurant is presented- like a pub but with a restaurant feel.

After a good night's sleep in the comfy bed we went down for breakfast. There was a big selection of dishes on offer, which I thought was impressive.

Tom went for the scrambled egg with smoked salmon with toast, which was a generous portion but the presentation wasn't good. I had the standard full English cooked breakfast.

We both enjoyed our stay, but it didn't quite live up to my expectations, compared to the last time I visited. Hopefully it will get back on track soon.
