PEOPLE over the age of 80 in Hillingdon are reminded they are eligible for the council's TeleCare line free of charge.

The borough announced in its 2014-15 budget that the age of free access was to be reduced from 85 to 80 to help more people remain in their homes for longer, rather than moving into nursing or residential care.

TeleCare is a 24-hour monitoring and alert system, which supports vulnerable people to live independently in their own homes.

The service gives residents who may have problems with memory loss, mobility, a disability or a chronic condition the opportunity to live independently, knowing that help is at hand if needed.

Residents are given a TeleCare unit and pendant, which can be used to trigger an alarm to a 24-hour monitoring centre.

A trained operator then determines the nature of the call and takes appropriate action, like contacting a relative or calling the emergency services.

Smoke detector, bed occupancy sensors and bogus caller alarms are also available, depending on the need and requirement of the resident.

TeleCare is available to all Hillingdon residents and offered to those over 80 free of charge. For more information, call 01895 556633. Or visit www.hillingdon.gov.uk/telecareline
