A WINTER night shelter for homeless people in Hillingdon opened this week, providing emergency support for up to ten men currently sleeping rough in the borough.
The shelter, based at the former Woodside Day Centre on the Uxbridge Road, will be run for the second year in a row by St Mungo’s Broadway.
Over six weeks in 2014, 14 people were helped with housing and to move their lives forward.
In the six weeks the shelter will be open, St Mungo's Broadway staff will look to get their guests into more stable, longer-term accommodation and to advise on health issues and training opportunities.
Candice Newlands, St Mungo's Broadway Coordinator for the shelter, said: “We will be giving people a warm bed and a hot meal but, when the winter shelter closes, we want our clients to feel they've been supported to think more positively about the future.”
St Mungo's will work with partners in Hillingdon to address health needs, including, if necessary, specialist services, such as alcohol and drugs counselling.
Staff will be joined by a team of volunteers to provide activities. Last year, faith and community volunteers provided food, fellowship and practical support to run the shelter.
