A community group who took part in nation-wide plastic collection campaign said they were pleased to be a part of improving the area.

The Meriden Residents Association in Watford took part in a morning collection on May 12 to mark the “Great Plastic Pick Up” by the daily Mail.

Prior to the drive, the members were campaigning for more volunteers, and on the day 13 people from the neighbourhood met outside Munden View at 10am to rid the area of plastic waste.

Four of our seven committee members, Steve, Brenda, Kon and Marion, were part of the group effort.

Participating in the country-wide scheme means the Meriden Residents Association could be entered into a free draw where three groups will be rewarded with a community make-over worth £10,000.

Group secretary, Marion Strawhorne, said: “Thirteen of us took part in the Great Plastic Pick Up and a great time was had by all. We worked in Meriden Park which covers quite a large area from our tower blocks to just past our Community Centre.

“We all wanted to do this because we all care about our area and want to make it a better place to live for all our residents and we also care about our environment.”

Meriden Residents Association said collectively: “A big thank you to all those all came to help at Meriden Park, and to Meriden Community Centre for letting us use their recycling bin, to Veolia and Watford Borough Council for lending us their community litter picking kits, and to Watford Community Housing for their continued support.”

The Daily Mail “Great Plastic Pick Up” is a joint enterprise with the Keep Britain Tidy charity.
