A sports club are desperately hoping that plans for 25 flats are approved, because it will help the club survive.

A developer has proposed to build flats on a section of West Herts Sports Club's site in Park Avenue, Watford.

Members of the sports club which is home to around 600 people says it is struggling to raise enough money to improve facilities or even worse, keep the club open.

The club, which was created in 1922, is hopeful that Watford Borough Council will approve the plans but it is believed planning officers are not so keen on the development.

Trustee at the club Glen Tomlinson, 62, said: "This is a very important club and we are in danger of it really deteriorating. We want to be able to attract new members. and we desperately need to raise funds. This development is a no brainer for us because we get vital money for the club and it provides homes as well.

"Sport England have no problems with the proposals but the council seem to as they are concerned a green space will be built on. But we don't use this space."

Hillingdon Times:

The land in question has been "unused" by the club for more than 30 years and is home to a portacabin.

In recent years, it has been the home of Health Inclusion Matters (HIM), an NHS site providing specialist care for homeless and vulnerable people.

David Pendry, chairman of the sports club, says he accepts the "importance" of the NHS facility but says that the sports club provides an equally as important site for for outside activity.

HIM currently lease the site and last year it was told the lease would not be renewed. It was supposed to leave the premises in June but has been told it can stay at the site until September.

Health Inclusion Matters did not want to comment.

The sports club is home to a variety of sports including football, tennis, cricket, and squash.

The planning application will be discussed at a development management meeting on July 25.
