DEVASTATED relatives are furious at maps published by BAA which show a planned link road passing through a Harlington cemetery.

Documents released as part of BAA's consultation over a proposed third runway at Heathrow Airport contained a map showing a spur road passing over the site of the Cherry Lane Cemetery in Shepiston Lane.

Edna La Mothe, 68, whose husband, Everest, was buried in the cemetery in 2003, said: "Saying I am angry is putting it very lightly. I am furious.

"When I buried him I expected him to be there for an eternity. It is just obscene that such an idea was even thought of.

"When I last went to the cemetery and I was speaking to someone about it, they couldn't believe it was true, they had no idea about it.

"This is somebody I love and for as long as I live I will fight for this."

Mrs La Mothe's daughter, Natasha, found out about the plans two weeks ago and has set up a online petition on the Government's Downing Street website.

She said: "There is one part of me that is appalled because nobody has been made aware of this.

"It is sacred land, you don't just mess it up without a thought of the people buried there and their friends and relatives.

"I am livid and devastated. When my father died, he did not want to be cremated, he wanted to be buried. If he was alive he would be furious."

Donna Casey, a spokesman for BAA, denied the company was planning to build roads through the cemetery.

She said: "The document is not wrong, but shows an indicative layout of where road access schemes could potentially be located if the Government made a decision in favour of a third runway.

"Future road access schemes would be subjected to a detailed design process and transport assessments in partnership with the relevant authorities.

"We apologise if local residents have been distressed by the map, but we can confirm that graves would not be destroyed."

However, Brian Sobey, the chairman of Sipson Residents' Association, said BAA's claims made a mockery of the consultation process.

He said: "They say the map in the consultation paper is indicative, which of course is absolutely pointless for anyone trying to make an objection to it.

"As a consultation document it's a load of rubbish. That's fundamentally ridiculous.

"If you're making a comment on something you should be looking at the images of what's actually going to happen if the plans go through."

If this commercially led monstrosity should be given the go ahead, it proves that both the government and the leaders of BAA and its affiliates place humanity and the environment second to profit and personal gain. How can this be right? It is NOT A SOLUTION to BAA’s planning problems.

To even conceive of this idea is not only stupid, it is outrageously insensitive. If this is approved - those who contributed directly or indirectly to the decision will NEVER BE FORGIVEN by so many people, alive and resting. So many souls at unrest - how can one sleep at night with that burden.

From someone who was born in Harlington with several relatives resting in Cherry Lane cemetery.

I am, like most people, disgusted by hearing this news. I have a aunt, who i nursed through cancer, who has been laid to rest there along with other people i know, young and old. Have people, of this community, not been through enough sorrow and pain losing a loved one without going through anymore upset. After all rest in peace should mean REST IN PEACE.

My Uncle (killed in the WWII), my grandmother and my mother rest in peace at the cemetry and I wholeheartedly oppose any disturbance of their grave and the grounds in which they are located. I thought there was a 100 year rule which meant that graves could not be built upon until that period of time had elapsed. Is this something else that this government and BAA are going to twist or ignore for thier own purposes?

The whole idea of money grabbers wanting to disturb many peoples last resting place is unforgiveable. My baby son, my father, my grandmother, 4 uncles, 1 aunt and my grandparents are all laid to rest there. Is money really that important that those families, such as mine, who are grieving the loss of loved ones are made to suffer more because of money hungry people

Andy Barnes, Uxbridge says...

As with almost eveything to do with BAA forcing through the 3rd runway application, it is ill conceived and in very bad taste. Everytime BAA manages another obscenity I gasp and say it can't get much worse than that!

They have this time hit an all time low.
DISGUSTING BAA TOTALLY DISGUSTING !

What is it with BAA they want to take away peoples homes and now they want to take away the place that people are laid to rest, I have family there and do not want them disturbed for the sake of a spur road Greed is a nasty trait and BAA should be ashamed of themselves

Spread the word to everyone you know and we will fight together! I too have relatives and friends laid to rest there - it is NOT ON BAA!!!!
p.s. we do not believe your spokesperson! Why make the map then? You (BAA) have and will upset even more people now!

My dad is buried at Cherry Lane and and it is the only place we have where we can sit in peace in memory of him. This idea just shows that BAA do not care at all for people who have already been through more sorrow than they can bear. It cannot happen.

My 2 year old daughter is buried here and I find this proposal absolutely stomach churning. Are BAA trying to alienate the whole of Hillingdon Borough with their consistant plans to demolish villages and their surroundings to accomplish more money, noise and polution.
I for one will fight against this.

Sean Osbourn, Hayes says...
12:56am Wed 28 May 08

My Mother is buried here and I would be devistated if the proposal was to go ahead. The dead should be able to rest in peace, not disturbed to put money into the pockets of these money grabbers. I would be suprised if any of them have any relatives buried here. I hope the Council takes the stand and does not allow this unholly proposal to go ahead. If there is any petition or rally against this, then count me in. This is an utter disgrace to even contenplate doing something as dire as this.

I have just been to visit my Mother,Father and Sisters grave and have come back absolutely incensed. The proposal to put a road through Cherry Lane cemetery is unbelievable. Do the people that come up with these ideas have relatives buried in Cherry Lane, I think not. I don't suppose they even live in the area.
BAA think they can run rough shod over everyone and it is about time we stood up against these money grabbers. If they want a fight then they have certainly got one with this outrageous proposal.

Philip Sherwood, Harlington says...

The fact that BAA is proposing to forcibly evict 3000 people from their homes shows that it has no respect for the living. Obviously it won't worry too much about the dead.

This is just pathetic.... how can u justify this. it was hard enough to bury relatives once, now they want to bring back the heart ache to the thousands of families who have generations of people laid to rest here. Im sure if the clever person or people who thought up this "Wondreful" idea had a relative buried here, there would be no way they would even dream about this road.... do we not have enough roads? is there not enough polution, now u want to disturb the dead and buried for yet another road!!!!! UR SICK!!!!!

Today is the 14th anniversay of my mothers death,I thought she would now after a long and horrible illness, be at peace,I bought the land opposite so when my time came I would be near her, BAA and the government should be ashamed of themselves if they go ahead with this plan, I hope they are aware that hell will await everyone that has anything to do with the plan, that is from the planning table to the finishing product.

My father is buried in the Muslim part of the cemetry and it has only been six months. I am shocked that such a proposal is even being considered. My father died suddenly and my self and my family are still in shock, but to have to hear about this is all too much. I will as I am sure many others will fight this with all our might. It is wrong wrong wrong. Do BAA not feel ashamed that they are causing so much distress?

I lost someone I loved 27 years ago, and have always taken comfort in the fact that I can stop at the Cemetery in Harlington at any time to pay my respects.

The mere thought that BAA would want to disturb anyone’s final resting place, and inflict yet more pain and suffering on the already grieving loved ones of those buried / commemorated there, beggars belief.

The fat cats at BAA should learn a few lessons in compassion, and keep their fat paws off this sacred land.

I am happy to back any campaign that ensures we keep BAA away .

I am disgusted by this news.
We buried our youngest son of 19 ten years ago,and our entire family of my wife and our two daughters, five grandchildren, two brothers and their entire familys all visit at christmas, his birthday, fathers day and at other times whenever the need is there to sit and pour out any troubles to him. He also left a wonderfully gifted son who visits frequently (he was only two when his dad died). This cannot be allowed!

Why did Hillingdon Borough take my money which they said, gave me the right to bury my mother in 2002 and have the same the right to bury my father with her up to and including the next 99 years. I have since learnt that although I still have those rights I only have them if the cemetary exists. It's about time that the British public stand up for themselves and their loved ones be they dead or alive.

Hope you can sleep at night, that will be us all one day.
