HOSPITALS are appealing for people to do all they can to avoid visiting A&E except in an emergency as the first of two junior doctors’ strikes starts tomorrow (20).

The first round begins at 7am and finishes at 7am on Saturday (23).

Doctors will then strike again from 7am on Wednesday, January 3, until 7am on Tuesday, January 9.

Dr Jon Baker, Chief Medical Officer at London North West University Healthcare, said: “Strikes will affect all in-patient and outpatient services at Central Middlesex, Ealing, Northwick Park and St. Mark’s sospitals.

“We are re-scheduling many appointments and planned procedures. If we need to change your appointment, we will send you a new date as soon as possible.

“If you don’t hear from us, please come to your appointment as usual.”

The greatest pressure will be felt in A&E. People should still ring 999 in an emergency but call 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk for help if it isn’t.

Dr Baker added: “Anyone coming into A&E can expect a longer than normal wait.

“Pharmacies or primary care are well equipped to advise and manage on a wide range of conditions we often see in the emergency department.

“We’re always here to care for you in a life-threatening emergency.”
