AN angry Uxbridge tenant had asbestos left in his garden for more than two weeks.

Landlord Sangeeta Chavda and her husband had dismantled a shed in Antony Casey’s Bridge Road garden, but the skip company refused to take away the waste because of its content.

Mr Casey called council officers who confirmed some of the waste was asbestos and issued Mrs Chavda with a notice to remove the offending material.

While some of the material has now gone, musician and student Mr Casey says he will not let his fiancé or his cat go into the garden until the rest is cleared.

“I’m absolutely livid,” said Mr Casey. “The recent high winds added to our anxiety as we and our neighbours are forced to make the back garden off-limits and my poor cat is going crazy indoors!”

Mrs Chavda said she was told by a skip company employee that the material was not asbestos after they came a second time to collect the waste.

She said she was still unsure until contacted by Hillingdon Council officers this week.

“I don’t know where it’s come from,” she said. “I don’t even know if it’s from the shed because there was none of that material in there.

“Regardless of what it is, it’s going to move now because I don’t want it to be a risk.”

A council spokesperson said: “Following a call from the tenant, a member of staff visited the property and a notice has now been served to the landlord to remove the asbestos cement.”

“If it is not complied with, the council will undertake the work and then recharge them.

“Although the terms of the notice give the landlord 21 days to act, discussions with them indicate they will be removing the asbestos as soon as possible, hopefully within the next few days.”
