CONTROVERSIAL changes to voting in Hillingdon could take place after councillors approved a review into the way it is conducted.

The number of people voting by post is reportedly growing and reductions to polling stations could save the council around £2,000.

The changes would involve the removal and/or relocation of polling stations in wards such as Pinkwell, Townfield and Hillingdon East.

Some polling stations in Heathrow Villages will also merge, creating larger polling areas.

Cllr Lynne Allen (Lab) told last Thursday’s council meeting: “This whole thing is a shambles.”

She said the proposals would negatively affect elderly people’s ability to vote in some areas and also force more voters to use their cars.

“In my view, we are not making voting easier for residents but making it harder for them,” she added. “This is merely a cost cutting exercise. Leave the polling stations as they are at present.”

Cllr Douglas Mills (Con), Cabinet Member for Improvement, Partnerships and Community Safety, countered: “While people in Hillingdon do get used to polling stations in their areas, they also recognise if change needs to happen.”

He said notice had been given to opponents to raise objections during a three-month public consultation period.

“The consultation started in July,” he said. “Did we hear any objections from these people then? No. We haven’t any more time – this needs to be completed by the December 31 deadline.”

Hillingdon has a statutory duty to review its polling districts every four years. There are currently 82.
