CARNIVALS, walking tours and reading challenges? This can only mean one thing: summer is well and truly here.

Here are my top five suggested items in the borough for under £5.

Thursday, July 10

Professional London-based group Voice will lead a vocal workshop for all ages and abilities between 2 and 3.30pm at St John’s Church hall, Hallowell Road, Northwood. The a-cappella trio will demonstrate how to tell stories through song and create harmonies. They’ll also be performing a selection of their work from 4.15-5:15pm at the church. Entry to the workshop is £5, as is entry to the concert.

Friday, July 11

Feel Good Fridays are given a health kick with a 45-minute walk from Yeading Library to Yeading Brook and back, starting at 10am. On arrival back at the library, there are refreshments. Free for all.

Saturday, July 12

Hayes Carnival returns to Barra Hall Park for another year. Starting at 12.30pm, the parade entrants will make their way there via Pump Lane, while the park will have something to keep the whole family amused from 1.30-5.30pm. The carnival is also looking for volunteers to help on the day. For more information, contact communitykevin@hotmail.com.

Saturday, July 12

Summer reading challenges are being launched across the borough, with youngsters encouraged to pop down to the library to get involved with various crafts. Sessions run between 10am and midday for libraries including Eastcote, Northwood and Northwood Hills. Manor Farm’s event runs from 11am until midday, while Charville’s session is midday to 3pm. Those who are out and about at Hayes Carnival can also drop into the mobile library between 11am and 5pm.

Sunday, July 13

All things retro come to Northwood today in a Vintage Event held at Michael Sobell Hospice, Mount Vernon Hospital. Classic cars, gift stalls and live music are all promised, with entry between 10am and 1pm at just £1 per person. Parking is free. All proceeds from the day will go towards patient care.
