HILLINGDON people are invited to donate a present to a child in care this Christmas as part of the Met Police Give a Gift’appeal.

Tags surrounding the Christmas tree in Uxbridge town centre each list the age and gender of a child that may not receive a gift on December 25.

The idea is that kind-hearted members of the public select a tag and buy a present costing no more than £20 as a donation.

It would then be wrapped and delivered to the child before Christmas Day.

This is the first year of the scheme in this area, and Tony Zaman, Interim Director of Children and Young People's Services in Hillingdon, hopes residents will support it.

He said: "Christmas is a wonderful time of year, but can also be a very difficult one for children who are unable to live with their birth families.

"Donating a gift to a looked-after child helps to make their Christmas special and also reinforces the message that somebody cares.

The easiest way to take part is to take a tag from the tree or email hillingdonChristmasTreeProject@met.pnn.police.uk where you will be given the age and gender of the child you are buying for.

The gift should be brought, unwrapped, into either Uxbridge or Hayes police stations.

The tree and tags will be on display until Monday, December 15.
