HUNDREDS of Beaver Scouts met at Northwood to celebrate their 30th birthday on Saturday by sleeping under the stars.

The Beavers formed in 1986 to provide a section for those too young to join the Cubs.

For many of the 350 six to eight-year-olds from across northwest London – both girls and boys – camping in a school sports field was the first night they had spent in a tent away from home.

Jane Sanguy, who organised the event with Stuart Walton, said: “I had a great team of volunteer helpers supporting me and without them, this type of event could not go ahead.

“It was a great achievement for our Beavers. It is really great because they get to share these special times having fun with their friends.

“As they were picked up by their parents on Sunday morning it was clear from the excited chatter that they had all had a great time.”

The opening ceremony included a surprise visit from a six-foot high furry Billy Beaver. It was followed by birthday cakes and an afternoon of walking, climbing, bouncing and karting.

The Beavers completed a series of challenges and gained their nights away, hikes away and explorer badges, as well as part of their science badges.

More Scout volunteers are needed as nearly 38,000 young people are on waiting lists to join, according to the Scout Association.

Anyone who is interested in volunteering or has a child wanting to join should contact the Scout Information Centre on 0845 3001818.
