STOP Northolt, the group voicing concerns over the £45m renovation of RAF Northolt, is demanding the Ministry of Defence is open about whether any of the work will take place at night.

The MoD says it is continuing to liaise with the Hillingdon Council and other stakeholders.

But residents say they have not been informed about the extent of potential disruption from the closure of Northolt next year to carry out improvements and maintenance work to the runway.

The number of lorry movements during renovation and the hours of work are yet to be revealed.

There is a growing feeling among neighbours that work will follow other airport renovations around the country in carrying out resurfacing at night.

Stop Northolt says when Aberdeen Airport underwent resurfacing in 2009, shifts took place at night.

Likewise, it says, Luton’s resurfacing in 2006 was done in shifts lasting between midnight and 5.30am over three months.

Similarly, night time shifts were undertaken throughout the renovation of Cambridge Airport between September 2014 and January 2016.

Given the renovation of RAF Northolt is so much larger in scale and cost than any of these previous renovations, many residents now fear that night time work will be unavoidable at the airfield.

Anna Williams from Stop Northolt said: “It’s bad enough hundreds of lorries and visiting construction crews will be driving through Uxbridge every day. The fact that this will keep us awake at night is worse.

"And, even when the renovation is finished, it will only mean more commercial flights passing overhead.

“With the MoD and Hillingdon Council failing to offer any information, residents fear the worst.

“It really is time for the MoD to undertake a full public consultation with residents, so our questions can be answered.”
