HUNDREDS of people turned out to a demonstration outside Downing Street last night to call on Gordon Brown to drop his plans for a third runway at Heathrow.

John McDonnell, MP for Hayes & Harlington spoke at the demonstration, organised by the Campaign Against Climate Change.

Other speakers included Linda McCutcheon, secretary of the NoTRAG, HACAN Chair John Stewart, Susan Kramer MP, the Green MEP Jean Lambert, and Anna Jones from Greenpeace.

John Stewart said: “The message of the demonstration was very clear. The fight against the third runway goes on. We are increasingly confident that the Brown Runway will never see the light of day."

The Government gave BAA the green light to draw up detailed plans for a third runway earlier this year.

BAA has said that it will need at least 18 months or two years to finalise the plans, which means they will not be ready before the next General Election which needs to take place by June 2010.

It will be the next Government which will have the final say on a third runway, and both the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats have said they would scrap all plans to expand Heathrow.
